Why Kitchen Islands Are the Most Requested Feature in Cyprus

The kitchen island has become the single most requested feature in new and renovated kitchens across Cyprus. In a decade where open-plan kitchen-living-dining spaces have become the dominant layout in both new-build villas and apartment renovations, the island is the element that defines the space — physically and aesthetically.

An island serves multiple functions simultaneously: it is the main food preparation surface, an informal dining and socialising zone, a storage system, and a visual anchor for the open-plan space. In the context of Cypriot life — where the kitchen is the social heart of the home and cooking is done in company — the island is particularly well-suited.

Island Sizes: What Works in a Cyprus Kitchen

The right island size is determined by the floor space available — specifically the clearance around the island on all sides. KITWOOD recommends a minimum 90cm clearance on all sides, 110cm+ for comfortable circulation, and 120cm+ where the island will be used by multiple people simultaneously.

Given these clearance requirements, the minimum room size for a freestanding island is approximately 4m × 3.5m. In rooms smaller than this, a peninsula (an island attached to one wall or run of units at one end) is often the better solution.

Island Worktop Materials for Cyprus

The worktop is the most used surface in any kitchen, and on an island it takes additional punishment — hot pots, food preparation, and social use. The best worktop materials for Cyprus kitchen islands:

Quartz: The most popular choice. Engineered stone combining natural quartz crystals with resin. Extremely hard, non-porous, and UV-stable. Available in an enormous range of colours and finishes, including convincing marble-look designs. Cost: €350–€750 per linear metre installed.

Porcelain (large-format): Increasingly popular for islands that need to make a visual statement. Large-format porcelain slabs (up to 320cm × 160cm) can cover an entire island in a single piece — no joins. Heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and available in spectacular natural stone replicas.

Neolith: An ultra-compact surface material (sintered stone). The hardest and most durable surface material available. More expensive than quartz or porcelain, but outperforms both in scratch and heat resistance. Popular for KITWOOD's TWENTYTWO collection projects.

Island Storage Configuration

The cabinetry beneath the island worktop is as important as the worktop itself. KITWOOD's standard island storage configurations:

Drawers on the primary preparation side: Deep drawers (minimum 200mm internal depth) accessible from the main work side of the island. These are the most frequently accessed storage in any kitchen — cutlery, utensils, food wraps, and frequently used small items.

Open shelving or wine storage on the seating side: The seating side of the island (where bar stools sit) benefits from open shelves or a wine rack rather than enclosed cabinetry — it creates a visual lightness and allows easy access to bottles, glasses, or books from the seating position.

Power and charging: KITWOOD recommends integrating a pop-up power socket and USB charging point into the island worktop or side — particularly useful at the seating end for phones, tablets, and laptops.
