Why Kitchen Storage Design Matters

The most common complaint about kitchens — even expensive, beautifully made kitchens — is inadequate or poorly planned storage. A kitchen with visually impressive fronts but a badly planned interior will frustrate its owner every day. Pots impossible to reach, a chaotic pan drawer, a corner unit that requires you to lie on the floor to access the back — these are storage failures, and they are entirely preventable.

Base Unit Storage: Drawers vs Shelves

Base units — the lower cabinets that form the primary storage volume of any kitchen — can be configured either as open shelf units (with doors and fixed or adjustable shelves inside) or as drawer systems. KITWOOD's strong recommendation is: drawers wherever possible.

The advantages of deep drawer systems over open shelves:

• Everything is visible and accessible without reaching into the back of a dark cupboard

• Items at the back are as easy to reach as items at the front — just pull the drawer out fully

• Drawer-in-drawer systems allow two levels of storage in one base unit

• Soft-close Blum drawer systems are smoother and more satisfying to use than any shelf

• Drawers are easier to keep clean — a single wipe removes crumbs and spills from a drawer base

Where open shelves are still appropriate: beneath the sink (a drawer doesn't work around the plumbing), and in units with awkward depths or diagonal cuts.

Tall Units: The Highest-Return Storage Investment

The tall unit — a floor-to-ceiling column of cabinetry typically 200–230cm high — is the most efficient storage space in any kitchen. The return in storage volume per square metre of floor space is the highest of any kitchen element.

Integrated oven column: A tall unit housing the oven at waist height, microwave above, warming drawer below, and storage above the microwave. Maximises oven ergonomics while using the full column height.

Fridge/freezer housing: A full-height integrated refrigerator housing that makes a full-size fridge appear as a seamless panel rather than a freestanding appliance.

Corner Solutions: Making Every Square Metre Productive

The kitchen corner — where two runs of cabinetry meet at 90° — is the most wasted space in any kitchen. Standard corner units with a hinged door and fixed shelf are almost unusable: you cannot see the back, cannot reach it, and the contents inevitably become a confused pile.

Magic corner: A pull-out system where a small front shelf pulls out first, then the rear shelf swings into view. Full access to the entire corner unit volume. Manufactured by Hettich (KITWOOD's preferred hardware supplier).

LeMans carousel: A rotating system that swings out of the corner unit when the door opens. Good accessibility and a satisfying mechanical action.

Diagonal drawer (45° corner unit): A drawer unit set at 45° at the corner. Simpler than the pull-out systems but very effective — the diagonal drawer is easy to access and keeps the corner volume well-organised.
